On the afternoon of December 14, 2021, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) updated existing guidance and put out a new travel advisory. These changes are in response to our strained healthcare systems and in anticipation of increased impact from the Omicron variant.
The updates are as follows:
- CDPH is requiring masks to be worn in ALL indoor public settings, regardless of vaccination status, from December 15th - February 15th.
- CDPH is requiring either proof of vaccination or testing within one day for antigen tests or two days for PCR tests for any Indoor Mega Event (greater than 1,000 people). They are recommending the same for Outdoor Mega Events (greater than 10,000 people).
The new travel advisory recommends that anyone visiting or returning to the state test 3 - 5 days after their arrival.
These enhancements are to further our protection against the more transmissible Omicron variant, prevent a spike in cases during and after the holiday season, and save our healthcare system from entering surge. These updates, in addition to proven mitigation strategies including handwashing, social distancing, staying home when sick, getting vaccinated and boosted, and testing regardless of vaccination status, can slow the spread and help us all stay healthy and safe.
